Popularity vs Respect
We all like to be popular but here Sir Martin Narey, Government Advisor and former CEO of Barnardos, delivers some possibly unwelcome home truths about mixing popularity with strong leadership.
Martin tells us that as a manager you must know the difference between popularity and respect and choose just one. However, he warns in a big managerial role it is not wise to seek popularity. It is better to focus on what you think is important. Respect is important but popularity doesn’t matter very much. A few very special people can command both but most must make a choice between the two.
