Dave Ridley from SouthWest Airlines on the importance of humility in leadership

One of the challenges all leaders face as they succeed in their careers is not to assume that past successes must inevitably lead to future successes. In this short video, Dave Ridley, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at SouthWest Airlines puts the case that leaders should “always be learners” about their leadership style and have the humility to recognise that they might need to change.

Dave argues that a willingness to be self aware and to modify your leadership style during the course of your career is not a sign of weakness, rather an important recognition of the environmental and social changes around you – and a strength that will engender respect from your team. It is important to have your own values and your own model for leadership, but “one style does not always fit all throughout ones career”.
